Dreame’s Robot Vacuum Won’t Be Climbing Stairs, but We Saw It Summit a Small Ledge at CES 2025
Stairs are a worry for every robot vacuum user. If you have stairs in your house, you either need a different robot vacuum for each floor, or you need to carry the robot vacuum up the stairs like a lost cat. When we heard Dreame might be solving this problem with the new robovac it showed off at the show CES 2025we were excited to check it out.
Unfortunately, the first few demos showed the robot having some issues before it hit the main stage. Dreame representatives blamed spotty Wi-Fi, which is definitely an issue during the big Las Vegas trade show. But after several failed attempts, we finally saw it climb.
Let’s be clear: the Dreame X50 robot vacuum doesn’t climb stairs. But we saw it climb up some little ledges that were only a few inches high, and it felt like a big step Sweeping robot Works for the whole family.
Curse your little robot legs
Unfortunately, the Dreame X50 Ultra isn’t quite capable of climbing stairs, although the addition of a tiny electric swing arm (Dreame calls it the ProLeap system) promises to overcome obstacles. The robot can actually only climb “stairs” if they are two inches (4.2 centimeters) or less high. So, unless you have ant-specific stairs in your home, Dreame will be able to cross vertical thresholds rather than climb stairs. It can also handle sliding door tracks up to 6 cm wide.
That’s not to say the X50 Ultra is useless. The demo we saw at CES had the vacuum climbing up two small ledges and then returning to its base. It slammed into the first ledge before realizing it should spread its legs. Two small wheeled appendages stick out and lift it up enough to get some traction on top of the ledge. It seemed to notice the second ledge earlier and stopped in front of it to rise and sail more smoothly over the top. A Dreame representative said the robot can both sense footsteps and adapt to more unexpected ones.
Dreame noted that in the longer term, it is developing a robotic vacuum cleaner with arms that can pick up socks and shoes, similar to a vacuum cleaner. Roborock sweeping robot Saros Z70 and its mission arm.
navigation
Speaking of navigation, it uses DToF LiDAR technology for 360-degree scanning, which has become a buzzword among robot manufacturers. The reason is LiDAR itselfnot as reliable as adding a camera sensor to the mix. Using LiDAR and cameras together gives you more accurate navigation, and Dreame then adds its own AI to help with object recognition.
It’s also worth noting that this means the X50 Ultra should be able to pass through small obstacles like power cords or cat toys without getting stuck, and its dual bottom-view sensors can recognize up to 200 objects and intelligently detect heights. The robot vacuum also comes with Dreame’s proprietary VersaLift navigation system, which dynamically adjusts its height to clean under furniture such as coffee tables and sofas. It’s worth noting that the lidar sensor is usually mounted on top of a robot vacuum, but in this case it can be retracted to access lower spaces.

cleaning ability
We’ve talked a lot about what the Dreame X50 Ultra can’t do, but as for what it can do, there’s nothing to scoff at. The robovac has a suction power of 20,000 Pa and doubles as a mopping robot. It comes with an AceClean DryBoard 20 high-temperature spray self-cleaning system and an automatic 176-degree Fahrenheit hot water mop for cleaning and drying.
Price and availability
As you might have guessed, all these features and capabilities, combined with Dreame’s two years of development, come with a hefty price tag. Dreame X50 Ultra is expected to be priced at $1,699.99, which is Eureka’s new J15 Max Ultra is priced at $1,299.
It will be available for purchase through Dreame’s official website and Amazon starting February 14th, but if you Pre-orders start on January 7thyou can pre-order it for $39 and get a $390 coupon and a $149 cleaning kit, as well as an extra two years of warranty.
