Conor McGregor: Drogheda United ‘do not associate’ with MMA fighter after cup photo
FAI Cup champions Drogheda United have distanced themselves from mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor after he shared a photo of the trophy on social media.
McGregor, 36, posted the photos on Instagram as he celebrated with his cousin Warren Davis, who did not play in November’s final.
McGregor’s Instagram post was captioned: “How much does it cost to buy a League of Ireland team? I might buy two.”
Drogheda beat Derry City 2-0 in Dublin The club won the FAI Cup for the second time in its history.
The League of Ireland Premier League club said in a statement that a social media post “brought our attention to the FIA Cup”.
The club added: “The individuals pictured are closely related to a player from our first team who, like all other players, has custody of the trophy in order to celebrate with his family at various intervals.”
“Drogheda United will not be associated in any way with the individuals who made the social media posts or any unauthorized brands mentioned.”
In November, an Irish jury found McGregor responsible for the attack Civil rape case.
The Irishman was ordered to pay €248,000 (£206,000) in compensation.
McGregor denies the allegations and says he will appeal the verdict
