Manchester United: Marcus Rashford set to miss Liverpool match through illness
Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford will miss Sunday’s Premier League match against leaders Liverpool due to illness.
Rashford, 27, was left out of manager Rúben Amorim’s squad for four games, initially due to his poor performances in training and his attitude towards colleagues at the club.
Meanwhile, Amorim confirmed the club will trigger the option to extend former captain Harry Maguire’s current contract until 2026.
But he added that Maguire “needs to improve as a leader because we crave leaders on the pitch”.
Amorim brought Rashford back into action in the home defeat to Newcastle on December 30, but he was relegated to the bench as United suffered a fourth consecutive defeat and three games without a goal. .
Serie A title contenders Napoli are the latest club to be linked with Rashford, with United willing to loan him out if he earns more than £300,000-a-week.
Manchester United are 14th in the league table heading into the weekend’s games.
With captain Bruno Fernandes and midfielder Manuel Ugarte returning from suspension at Anfield, it is still uncertain whether Rashford will feature in Amorim’s squad.
But the former Sporting CP boss has ruled out that possibility.
“At the moment he is sick,” Amorim said. “He didn’t practice and he’s out this week.”
Asked about Rashford’s place at the club, he added: “It’s the same situation. We’ll see in the future but it’s like an ordinary player and then I’ll make my choice.”
