Lionesses: What shape are defending champions England in for Euro 2025?
Wigman’s first year in charge couldn’t have gone any better as England secured Euro 2022.
Her team then overcame injuries to reach the 2023 Women’s World Cup finals and win their first Finalissima trophy.
Last year expectations were high and the pressure was on, but England’s performance left a lot to be desired.
The Lionesses stumbled through Euro 2025 qualifying after poor performances against Sweden and France after failing to qualify for the Olympics.
A period of experimentation ensued, with Wegman changing formations and rotating her players, meaning results were mixed.
Midfielder Georgia Stanway admits they have “a lot to do” after their defeat to Germany in October but they are not panicking.
“Overall, I don’t think we need to be too disappointed,” she said. “We need a long process to adapt to the euro.
“This is a step in that direction – for better or for worse. It’s one way we can learn.”
The Lionesses have won seven of 12 games but improved on a goalless draw against Olympic champions the United States.
Wigman and her players are under pressure to deliver this year and end 2024 with more questions than answers.
