From David Beckham to Josh Windass: BBC Sport looks at own-half stunners

Josh Windass was in fine form in the Championship against Derby County, having scored in each of his last four games.

Head coach Danny Rohr took into account the pressure his players were under during the busy festive period and decided to rotate the number 10 to the bench against the Rams before bringing him on at half-time.

Management tip?

Just over 15 minutes into the game, Windass was unhappy about not starting the game, picking up the ball about 35 yards from his own goal and taking a touch…

He told BBC Radio Sheffield: “I just looked up and initially I wanted to try and get past the defender but the keeper was so far away and I thought ‘he’s done’.”

Rams goalie Jacob Widell Zetterstrom was beaten for 62.2 yards, and if it wasn’t his New Year’s resolution not to stray too far from his own goal before, it might be now.

Meanwhile, Windass hopes the goal will earn him a nomination for the FIFA Puskas Award, awarded to him for the best year in world football for his stunning goal at Blackburn Rovers last year. He was left out in the cold.
