Aaron Ramsey: Wales captain in World Cup qualifying fitness race

Captain Aaron Ramsey faces a race against time to fit in for the start of Wales’ World Cup qualifying campaign.

The 34-year-old Cardiff City midfielder has not played since suffering a hamstring injury while playing for Wales against Montenegro in September.

Ramsey had been due to return to action in two months’ time but returned to training with Cardiff City before suffering a setback.

Now, the former Arsenal and Juventus playmaker may struggle to return in time for Wales’ opening World Cup qualifying match against Kazakhstan on March 22.

“Aaron is still recovering,” Cardiff City manager Omar Riza said.

“His process was a little slow because he had these injuries when he wasn’t under pressure to really push the game.

“He’s just coming off rehab and I think Aaron will probably be back in March.”

Cardiff City are also currently without the midfielder after Scotland international David Turnbull underwent surgery on a hamstring injury in December.

There are fears the former Celtic man could miss the remainder of the season, but Riza hopes Turnbull will be available before then.

“Initially it looked like it might be (the end of the season). It’s still a long way off but he’s had surgery and is moving around,” the Cardiff boss added.

“He’s not feeling any pain so once that happens he can progress with strength training and rehab work. Hopefully it will be March or April, which is towards the end of the season, but he has the potential to play before the end of the season”.
