Police say a suspected gas explosion occurred on Hugh Street in Whitehaven

Three people were seriously injured in a suspected gas explosion.

Cumbria Police said emergency services were called to an address in Hugh Street, Whitehaven, at 16:23 GMT.

Police confirmed two men and a woman were seriously injured and taken to hospital.

Whitehaven councilor Joseph Ghayouba, who represents the Branstie ward, told BBC Radio Cumbria the “tight-knit” community was in a “state of shock” but was coming together Help those affected.

He said: “I’ve had a lot of messages from residents offering a place to spend the night if they had nowhere to go, people offering blankets, clothing and a place to stay.

“The community is really improving.”

Crews from Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service and North West Ambulance Service are at the scene, as well as engineers from Northern Gas Networks (NGN).

Emergency services urged people to avoid the area.

They also said that “all known persons” were accounted for, but that work to confirm this was “ongoing”.
