Opta’s current predictions, calculated using thousands of season simulations, show a 0.1% chance of United finishing 18th in the Premier League table and a 0.0% chance of finishing in the bottom two.
In fact, United are more likely to finish fifth (1.3%) than finish in the bottom three.
According to Opta, their most likely final ranking is 12th (15.1%), followed by 13th (13.9%) and 11th (12.6%).
Amorim’s side were expected to finish with 50 points – a far cry from their expectations but also far from serious danger.
