Lee Jung-jae reprises his role as Player 456 in the second season of Netflix’s “Squidward Game.”

Battle of Xs and Os

Once they added an electoral component to the mix, it felt like a civil war was about to break out between the rivals. That’s exactly what happened. Thanks to hilarious hype from the hip-hop musician/Thanos villain, a bathroom fight breaks out between X and Os.

Squidward is known for its brutal series, but this scene really captures the essence of the game. It’s an up-close and personal battle that reaches new heights when the rap star himself has a fork stuck to his throat.

If you thought this fight was unplanned, you’ve got another thing coming up. When did they start giving contestants cutlery that could be used as weapons? This is part of the lead singer’s plan. Several players were eliminated (meaning they died) after brawling, resulting in an imbalance in numbers between the two factions – meaning the next vote could end with a majority going home.

Search for mysterious island hits roadblocks

Since the first episode, Detective Hwang Joon-ho has been on a mission to find the island where the competition is held. You’ll remember, he came there to rescue his brother in season one. Returning to the island proved to be more of a problem than he initially expected.

That’s not to say he hasn’t succeeded in attracting highly skilled teams to join him in his hunts. He has. The captain who searches for the island with Jun-ho is impressed by their new drone equipment. Still, frustrations continue.

In the finale, a key detail is revealed that may explain why Joon-ho always comes back empty-handed. After discovering the captain tinkering with a faulty drone, he murders one of Jun-ho’s crew and throws him overboard. It seems like he’s been complicit in some way with the frontman’s bloody actions.

Ki-hoon’s revenge plan has taken shape

Ki-hoon could have taken the money he won from the tournament and traveled to a remote tropical location to live a better life. He didn’t. Instead, each episode of Season 2 finds Player 456 embarking on a disciplined path to save as many lives as possible and dismantle the game for good. So instead of hopping on a plane and disappearing forever, he decided to squeeze his way back into these violent childhood games.

It’s all about revenge. After the toilet fight, Ki-hoon tells his crew that once the lights go out, the other side will come for their heads. That’s exactly what they did. Instead of fighting back, though, he directed them all to wait under the bed until the guards came in. Although his teammate Oh Young-il expressed some opposition to the idea.

The attack took place in darkness and several players were eliminated. Despite this, player No. 456 is still waiting silently. Once the door opens and the striker’s followers come in to end the violence, they fight back and acquire enough guns to suppress the entire operation.

Closed but no cigar

Obviously, Ki-hoon’s coup will not be completely successful. But it’s so cool to see the prisoners refocus their goals, regain their power, and escape this hellhole once and for all. There were even times when I thought they would succeed.

The lead singer, though, is a sly sociopath. Or should I say Oh Young-il?

All this time, Young-il has been acting as one of the rivals in these games, when in reality, he’s the one responsible for the evil. When he first enters the game and talks to Gi-hun, Young-il emotionally reveals his reason for playing: his sick wife is pregnant and desperately needs medical care, but they can’t afford it.

Is this a lie? Or is there some truth to this story, potentially revealing Ying-il’s origin story before she took on the role of lead singer? Regardless, it’s a wonderful narrative tool that certainly adds fuel to Ki-hoon’s fire.

Kihun didn’t know the identity of the lead singer. not yet. After approaching the destruction of the control room, Ying-il reveals over the intercom that he and his men have been eliminated. Soon after, Ki-hoon and his old friend Park Jung-bae are besieged by a sinister man in a black mask and his masked followers. To make up for his rudeness, Ki-hoon witnesses Jeong-bae’s murder.

That’s it. This is the end. There is no ending and little hint of what happens next. But there are definitely hints.

Squidward Season 2 credits post Netflix

The Squidward Season 2 finale’s post-credits scene teased a mysterious new game.

Netflix

This brings me to that post-credits scene I mentioned earlier. Seconds later, the viewer sees a giant statue of a boy facing the iconic red and green light girl. Here’s a peek at a new game for contestants to play. But what is that? My first thought was that Red Light, Green Light might have a gender twist, with men and women fighting for supremacy.

But it might be a twist on the classic childhood game “Red Rovers,” in which two rival teams try to break each other’s linked arms by taking turns sending one of their own off. While this is all speculation, it would be cool to see what new games are coming.

As we wait for the final round of episodes, some big questions remain: Will Detective Hwang Joon-ho find the island? How will Ki-hoon’s time in the challenge change? In fact, what will be the punishment for everyone involved? That remains to be seen, but there are signs that these games will become more sinister.
