Tourist killed in Red Sea shark attack near Marsa Alam area
A tourist has been killed and another injured in a shark attack off Egypt’s Red Sea coast, officials said.
Sunday’s incident occurred north of Port Alam, a resort town in eastern Egypt popular with divers, the North African country’s environment ministry said in a statement.
It added that the attack occurred “in deep water outside a designated swimming area”.
While the foreign ministry said only that the two victims were foreigners, AFP reported that they were Italian nationals, citing an unnamed source at the Italian foreign ministry.
According to AFP, the dead man was 48 years old and a resident of Rome, and the injured man was 69 years old.
Egyptian officials said the two tourists were taken to a hospital in Ghalib port, about 30 miles north of Alam.
Authorities said the swimming area in Marsa Alam will be closed while the incident is investigated.
Four people have been confirmed killed by shark attacks in the past 10 years, according to data compiled by the Independent Shark Research Institute.
The last one occurred in June 2023 near Hurguda and involved a 24-year-old Russian man.
