west palm beach — A Brightline train collided with a fire truck in Delray Beach early Saturday morning, hospitalizing at least three firefighters and injuring a dozen others, officials said.

Delray Beach Fire Rescue Capt. Ronald Martin told reporters the incident happened around 10:50 a.m. at the intersection of East Atlantic Avenue and Southeast First Avenue.

Photos shared by CBS News Miami viewers showed a heavily damaged Brightline train parked at a railroad crossing, with what appeared to be a smashed fire truck behind it.

according to delray beach city officialsPalm Beach County Fire Rescue provided assistance and transported a total of 12 people to the hospital with minor injuries.

Three firefighters were also injured in the incident, two of whom were in critical condition at the scene. They were taken to Delray Beach Trauma Center and are in stable condition, Martin said.

Martin said there are currently no known deaths.

one cbs news miami viewers X said fire trucks were reportedly responding to a crash in the area. Martin said there were calls for repairs at the same time before the accident. However, he could not confirm whether the fire truck involved was responding or assigned to the incident as the timing was still unclear.

Martin added that he had not received information on whether the guardrail was down at the time of the crash.

delray beach police department The intersection of East Atlantic Avenue and Southeast First Avenue was closed due to an accident, it said on Sunday. Drivers in the area are advised to use Northeast First Avenue or Southeast Second Avenue as alternative routes.

The Delray Beach Police Department, Brightline officials and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
