Paul Bamba: Puerto Rican champion boxer dies aged 35
Boxer Paul Bamba has died at the age of 35, his manager Ne-Yo announced.
On December 21, Puerto Rican boxer Bamba defeated Mexican Rogelio Medina and won the WBA lightweight gold belt.
Singer Ne-Yo signed Bamba to his agency in November and confirmed the news in a joint statement with Bamba’s family on Instagram.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Paul Bamba, our beloved son, brother, friend and boxing champion whose light and love touched countless lives,” the statement read.
“He is a fierce and confident competitor with a relentless ambition for greatness.
“But above all, he was a great man who inspired many with his extraordinary drive and determination.
“We are heartbroken by his passing and ask for your privacy and understanding as we grieve together during this difficult time.”
Bamba won all 14 matches in 2024 by knockout, eventually defeating Medina in New Jersey to win the world title.
After last week’s win, Bamba posted on his Instagram: “This year I set a goal. That’s what I did. It wasn’t easy, there were a lot of obstacles, I adapted to overcome them and kept going on the path we set Road, no matter the situation.
He added: “If you have a goal that some would call outlandish, go after it. Anyone who thinks it’s not as brave as you, prove people wrong.”
Bamba has a total of 19 wins in 22 career fights, 18 of which were via knockout.
Bamba had called for him to fight in the future, with Jake Paul posting on X: “RIP Paul Bamba.”
