Wayne Rooney: Plymouth Argyle boss says he should still lead club

Wayne Rooney says he still believes he is the right man to lead Plymouth Argyle despite another heavy loss away from home.

Lost 4-0 to Coventry City on Boxing Day It was the fifth time this season that bottom-placed Pilgrims have conceded four or more goals in away games in the Championship.

Argyle’s away form is the worst in the English Football League, with just 2 points from 12 games – scoring 3 goals and conceding 33 goals.

It was their fifth loss in the last six games – Play-off draw with Middlesbrough 3-3 In their last game it was the only point Argyle had won in over a month.

They are now just two points from safety at the bottom of the Championship ahead of a crucial game away to fellow struggling Oxford United on Sunday 29 December.

Asked if he was still the right man to lead Argyle, Rooney replied: “I believe I am. I know how football works, I’m not stupid and you need to get results.

“The biggest frustration for me all season has really been that we looked like two different teams at home and away.

“So are there psychological issues? That’s something we’re looking at.”

He added: “I’m sure the fans have questions, and I’m sure a lot of people on the outside will have questions too, and I’ll try to answer them as best I can.”
