Nigeria has stepped up efforts to combat oil theft, dismantling 56 filling stations and recovering 1.2 million liters of stolen crude oil in a recent crackdown. The crackdown included the destruction of 15 illegal refineries in Bayelsa State. Authorities also arrested 17 suspects and seized vehicles and refinery equipment. Although Nigeria is Africa’s largest crude oil producer, billions of dollars are lost each year to oil theft, which harms exports, government finances and environmental health. Experts highlight social and economic injustice in the oil-producing Niger Delta as its root causes, including neglect, lack of infrastructure and environmental degradation. Financial adviser Omaru Ahmadu warns that unless these issues are addressed, thefts will continue. Critics, meanwhile, argue that political will and accountability are crucial to solving the problem.
