Sporting sack Ruben Amorim successor Joao Pereira and appoint Rui Borges
Sporting CP have appointed Rui Borges as head coach after sacking Joao Pereira. Joao Pereira has been in charge of the Portuguese club for just over a month following the departure of Ruben Amorim.
Pereira takes over as Lisbon coach Shortly after Amorim left to become Manchester United manager He went through a rough patch at the helm in November.
Sporting lost four of eight games under Pereira, which saw them eliminated from La Liga, with rivals Benfica leapfrogging them into first place.
Borges left Vitoria Guimarães to become Sporting CP coach and signed a contract until June 2026, which included an option to extend for a further year.
“The timing is right for me,” said Borges, whose first game will be against Benfica on Sunday.
“That’s always true. I’m very optimistic and I believe things will happen when they have to. This is an opportunity that we all strive for.”
“I’m the leader of the Portuguese champions and I couldn’t be happier. I look at the team and it’s the best. Now is not even the time to talk about signings.”
