The final episode of Gavin & Stacey is finally here, and millions of fans are tuning in to see if Smith says yes.

The hit BBC sitcom ended on an incredible cliffhanger in 2019, with Ruth Jones’ Nessa getting down on one knee and James Corden’s Smithy ) in front of, propose to him.

But what happened next? Did he say yes?

After months of waiting, fans of Gavin and Stacey will finally find out, and now the cast has finally revealed what happened in the final episode.

No – Smith didn’t say yes to Nessa. In fact, he said nothing…

Instead, Smith agreed to marry Sonya — yes, his girlfriend (and now fiancée), who was last seen in the 2019 Christmas special, played by Laura Aikman.

“I called Ruth and said, ‘I wonder if we could trick everyone into thinking that, for the first six or seven minutes, they were just going to watch a wedding between Nessa and Smith,'” shared Says the creator, James Corden.

This clever twist made everyone think Smith had said yes…only to pull the rug out from under our feet.

“What’s really interesting is that after the 2019 special, everyone would say to us ‘What did he say?'” Corden said.

“They would never say, ‘Who did he choose?’ I don’t even think it exists on the periphery of people.”

“She stayed in different hotels, and she would go places in the dead of night,” Corden said, explaining the secret behind Aikman’s involvement.

“She didn’t even tell her mum and dad,” Ruth Jones added. “She didn’t even tell them she was involved.”

“It was an incredible performance,” Corden added. “It would be an almost impossible task to make what would have been a cartoon in anyone else’s hands, and I hope she can be praised for what I think is a flawless performance.”

It seems we will never know what happened on the fishing trip.

“I would say now and forever — the joke has always been you don’t know what’s going to happen on a fishing trip!” said Robert Wilford, who plays Jason.

This long-standing joke involves an incident that happened years ago between Uncle Bryn and Jason.

Unfortunately, those who wish finally know what happened Will be disappointed.

“I’m sorry everybody,” Wilford said. “But it’s always been a joke and always will be because it’s funny! It’s funnier this way. I’m glad we didn’t reveal it because we never knew what it was.”

However, there was one man who knew what was going on – Coach Dave.

“Now that the last episode is over, I hope people won’t ask me anymore,” said Stefan Rodri, who plays Dave.

Even though Dave almost blurts it out in the finale, that’s as close as we can get.

“He will take this to his grave,” Rodri added. “This is your only chance to hear it. Yeah, it’s one of those great jokes that they created – I love that. It’s so fitting that nothing will be revealed.”

After being a bit snarky throughout the finale, Gwen revealed that she has a boyfriend.

But no one expected it to be Coach Dave.

“I never thought in a million years it would be Coach Dave,” said Melanie Walters, who plays Gwen.

“I thought it would be one of the things Doris threw away,” she added.

“It works, doesn’t it?” said Wilford. “They make a great couple. They really are! After the initial shock, they look great together.”

“You can really see why they’re attracted to each other,” said Rhodri, who plays Dave.

“Well, I don’t know. I understand why Dave is attracted to Gwen. I don’t know why Gwen is attracted to Dave.

“Maybe he wasn’t an obvious choice, but I thought maybe she needed a little excitement in her life. He’s obviously a colorful character, so why not?”

“One of my favorite moments was when Dave was revealed,” Rhodri added.

The family was obviously mortified, but Nessa was there when he came down the stairs and she responded in the best Nessa way imaginable.

“I loved shooting that scene and I think they all saw him and the family, so Jason, Stacey and Brynn were obviously furious and they couldn’t believe it,” Rodri said.

“And Nessa was like ‘Okay, Dave?’ Dave just said, ‘Okay, Nath?’ “It was like a natural thing – they broke up a long time ago, so why not, you know?”

“I don’t know how people are going to react, but because Gwen is so stereotypical, you know, and such a wooden character, I think, hopefully, people will be excited for Gwen because she’s in her life.

“Dave was able to provide that,” Rodri added.

At the end of the day, when all was said and done, of course he married her.

After abandoning Sonya at the altar, Smith ran to find Nyssa, but she had decided to return to the ship to help deal with her broken heart.

As Nessa prepares to set off at Southampton Pier, Smith and the others pile into Dave’s carriage and speed off.

“It’s great – I’m excited,” Rodri said.

“I mean, it’s always fun to play with James and, you know, the relationship between Dave and Smith, starting from when he first met him at the barn dance, you know, it’s always fun .

“So, now it’s like, ‘You go find her,’ you know, it’s very interesting,” he added.

Thankfully, he got there just in time as Nessa was boarding her boat and Smith got down on one knee to propose to her. Of course, she said yes (eventually).

In stark contrast to Smith and Sonia’s ill-fated wedding, the episode ends with Smith and Nessa’s reception at a local bar.

“It was lovely because it did feel like a real wedding,” Jones said. “It’s like a real bartender.”

The final montage was shot on the last day of production.

“It was probably the most emotional movie set I’ve ever been on, it was just amazing,” Corden said.

“A lot of our staff have been with us since the beginning. It’s a great way to end things in Barrie on Monday.”

The ending is Last night 12.3 million people watched on BBC One.

That made it the most-watched non-sports program overnight in 2024, with “Wallace and Gromit” in second place with 9.38 million viewers.

The last Gavin and Stacey Christmas special was watched live by 11.6 million people. That number grew to 18.4 million over the next 28 days as people caught up on iPlayer.
