Sophie Hediger: Swiss snowboarder dies in avalanche aged 26
Swiss Olympic snowboarder Sophie Hediger was killed in an avalanche at the age of 26, the Swiss Ski Federation said on Tuesday.
A member of the Swiss national snowboard cross team was involved in the incident at the Arosa mountain resort on Monday.
“We are speechless and our thoughts are with Sophie’s family and we express our deepest condolences to them,” said Walter Reusser, CEO of Swiss Ski’s sports division.
“For the Swiss-Ski family, Sophie’s tragic death has cast a pall over the Christmas period. We are deeply saddened.”
Hediger competed in the 2022 Winter Olympics in China and appeared on the World Cup podium twice in the 2023-24 season.
Meanwhile, the federation said further details about her death would be kept private in line with an agreement with her family and partner.
