Police Arrest Two in Alleged Witchcraft Plot Against Zambia’s President
Zambian police have arrested Jasten Mabulesse Candunde and Leonard Phiri for allegedly conspiring to use witchcraft to harm President Hakainde Hichile Horse (Hakainde Hichilema). The suspects, reportedly hired by Nelson Banda, brother of fugitive MP Jay Banda, face charges of witchcraft, possession of spells and animal cruelty. Police spokesman Rae Hamoonga said the pair, described as practicing witch doctors, were found to possess various charms, including a live chameleon. Their alleged mission was to use the charms to harm the president in exchange for a promised $7,400 payment. The arrests highlight a strange and worrying change in Zambia’s political climate as authorities further investigate the alleged conspiracy. Meanwhile, Nelson Banda remains at large while facing serious robbery charges after escaping from prison in August.
