NFL Christmas Day games: Why do US sports play on 25 December?

The NFL has experimented with alternative broadcasts (or “altcasts”) to attract younger viewers, and the NBA is following suit.

An NBA game will be shown in animated format for the first time this Christmas, but the NFL says its coverage will be a “must-see cultural and global event”.

Mariah Carey recorded a performance of holiday hits for the NBA on Christmas Day. She did that for the NFL this year.

Beyoncé will also perform a half-time performance at the second game in Houston, which will take place around 22:45 GMT. Taylor Swift may even be available for Game 1 as her partner, Travis Kelce, will play for the Kansas City Chiefs.

This is the latest move taken by Netflix following its strategic transformation to “enter large fan bases in comedy, reality shows, sports and other fields.”

Bela Bajaria, chief content officer at Netflix, added: “No live annual event, sporting or otherwise, can match the audience that NFL football attracts.”

Netflix made its first foray into live boxing last month Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson, Compromised due to technical issues.

Netflix said the battle’s peak concurrent streams were 65 million, from 282.3 million subscribers.

Beyoncé’s halftime show is expected to see a surge in attendance, and the NFL is excited about the increase in attendance.

If this service continues, perhaps it will become a global tradition.
