Carlos Corberan: Valencia make approach for West Bromwich Albion boss
Steve Hermon, BBC Radio WM
Carlos Corberan has been increasingly linked to multiple jobs lately, which is a sign of a busy agent, but it could also be that he wants pastures new for himself.
Valencia have always been an important team in European football, winning La Liga and the UEFA Cup as recently as 2004, but the appeal of the job may come more from off the pitch.
The Spaniard grew up in the village of Chester, just over 20 miles from Valencia’s Mestalla Stadium.
His parents still live in the Valenciennes area, he has a Spanish wife, Claudia (whom he actually met in Leeds, where she worked as a translator), and they have two young children, the boy Darry O and Marcos.
Although Corberan is a workaholic who lives and breathes football, he is also a proud family man. Maybe getting closer to loved ones will help.
He is also an ambitious coach. His 11-game spell with Olympiacos in Greece’s top flight gave him a sting, with that spell ending shortly before his arrival at The Hawthorns, so this is his first real chance to work at an elite level.
Like all Spanish clubs, Valencia are in the winter break, but his first game in charge will be at home against Real Madrid on January 3. A day later, Albion travel to Swansea, kicking off at 12.30, so you can understand the pull.
