‘Vast majority worship him’ – Kieran McKenna has backing at Ipswich
It’s not just the fans who are shocked by the club’s progress, but also the players.
Left-back Leif Davis joined Ipswich from Leeds United in 2022 and played an integral role in Town’s success.
“Given where we were two years ago, it’s hard to accept,” he said. “When I came they said, ‘We want to be in the Championship within four years’.
“It seems realistic but to be in the Premier League in two years, it’s a dream and it’s great to be part of that. But we’re not content with just being here. We want to do well.”
Of the 11 players Ipswich started on Saturday, six were players in the league. But it was the first time the team looked stretched beyond their depth, a harsh reality check a week after their second win at Wolves, 2-1 on the road.
“It’s one of the most disappointing days of the season,” said lifelong Ipswich fan Phil Ham. Independent supporters website TWTD., external
“It’s always tough against a team like Newcastle with the squad they have. You go into home games with hope and most of the time we were competitive but every time Newcastle scored they looked like they were going to score.
“People are realistic about the scale of the challenge, two levels up in two years, and expect there will be days like this. But no one is asking for change and people realize we have come a long way. In a short space of time.”
