Ethiopia: Reconstruction of two primary schools in Tigray’s Hawzen District benefits 1,800 students

United Nations - Ethiopia

The reconstruction of two primary schools in Hassen District, Tigray Region has created a good learning environment for students.

The two schools – Megabu Primary School and Maryam Zara Primary School – were successfully rebuilt as part of the Ethiopian government’s Response-Recovery-Resilience in Conflict-Affected Communities (3R4CACE) project, funded by the World Bank and funded by Implementation. The reconstruction has significantly improved the schooling conditions of more than 1,800 students.

The two schools were prioritized for infrastructure restoration projects after suffering severe damage.

Mariam Zala Primary School in the Hawzen district now has two new buildings with eight classrooms and an administration building, while Megab Primary School is equipped with a building containing four classrooms, each with a capacity of at least 50 students. Both schools have hybrid toilet buildings with septic tanks and soakaways, as well as upgraded water and electrical systems.

Other improvements include fencing, sidewalks, water points and landscaping. A new gate was also constructed for Mariam Zala Primary School, further enhancing the school’s infrastructure.

Redevelopment work has ensured that both schools have improved sanitation systems and accessible and inclusive facilities for students with disabilities. After reconstruction, the school is now better able to accommodate more students, creating a conducive learning environment for all.
