Woman dies after being set on fire on subway train
A suspect has been arrested in New York for setting a fire on a Brooklyn subway train that killed a woman.
Police Chief Jessica Tish described the incident on Sunday as “one of the most depraved crimes a person can commit against another person.”
She said the woman was sleeping on an F train bound for Brooklyn when the suspect approached her and lit her clothes on fire with a lighter.
The victim died at the scene, she said, adding that the suspect was taken into custody after being detained on another subway train.
Police said the unnamed woman was sleeping in a subway car at the Stilwell Avenue station in Coney Island, Brooklyn, when a man approached her around 07:30 local time (12:30 GMT). .
Police said there was no interaction before the attack, adding they did not believe the two men knew each other.
The man got off the train as police patrolling the station responded to the fire.
“What they saw was a man standing in a train carriage engulfed in flames,” Ms Tisch said.
Police are still working to identify the victim and a motive for the attack.
