Warren Gatland: Wales head coach decision divides pundits
Former Wales captain Ken Owens believes the decision will provide some short-term certainty for the Six Nations squad to be named in mid-January.
“They (WRU) have obviously done a thorough review and made a decision,” Owens said.
“At least the Six Nations have a bit of stability now. Everyone knows where they are.”
Owens believes the problem is bigger than the Wales coach.
Owens added: “Until we look at the whole structure and system of Welsh rugby we could be in a similar position.”
Tierney said Gatland’s stance would be reviewed after the Six Nations but refused to reveal what his performance targets would be.
Former Ospreys boss Sean Howley was happy to outline his expectations, saying Wales should aim for three wins in next year’s Championship.
“Abby Tierney mentioned numbers a lot,” Hawley said.
“You can talk about as many statistics as you want, but winning is the most important thing.
“For me, three wins (would be success) – two at home and one on the road.
“You can’t be happy just because you beat Italy.”
