Belfast City Airport runway closed after emergency incident

The runway at Belfast City Airport will be closed for the remainder of Sunday after an Aer Lingus plane suffered an emergency while landing in strong winds.

The plane was traveling from Edinburgh to Belfast at around 16:00 GMT with four crew members and no passengers on board.

Pictures showed the plane’s nose wheel collapsed and it came to rest on the runway.

It is understood no one was seriously injured.

This is a “positioning flight” operated by Emerald Air on behalf of Aer Lingus.

Emerald Air said it “experienced a hard landing upon arrival at Belfast City Airport due to adverse weather conditions”.

Two flights from London City and Leeds Bradford were due to land at the airport but were diverted to Belfast International Airport.
