South Sudan’s 2026 Elections: Progress or Another Delay?

South Sudan has postponed elections several times since independence in 2011 and plans to hold its first general election in December 2026. Elections scheduled for 2023 were postponed to allow time for a national census, the drafting of a permanent constitution and the registration of political parties. The transitional government led by President Salva Kiir has extended its term to facilitate these preparations. However, challenges remain, including budget constraints and concerns about preparedness. Gabriel Deng, deputy chairman of the Election Commission, said key processes such as the census remain stalled due to funding issues. Amid uncertainty, Nicholas Haysom, head of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, warned that poorly managed elections could reignite violence and stressed the importance of building trust and being properly prepared for postponed elections.
