Everton: Sean Dyche says new owners Friedkin Group ‘fully supportive’ of him

Financial problems and uncertainty about takeovers have left Everton in a poor position in the Premier League table in recent years, and it is a similar situation this season.

The club is currently in 16th place, just three points above the relegation zone.

Dyche, whose contract expires at the end of the season, said when asked about his future: “Winning games is always in your favour. “Apart from that, he (Watts) made it very clear face to face, what they do None but support for me, the staff and the team but you have to win games and it’s a natural progression.

“From chatting today, it’s more of a business approach, it’s going to be hands-off and (a philosophy) you’re there for a reason.”

Watts also spoke about the importance of the women’s team and Roma’s success under the Friedkin Group since taking over the Serie A side in 2020, winning two league titles and the Coppa Italia.

Despite the club having a wealthy new owner, Dyche says spending on the men’s team in the January transfer window will be modest rather than extravagant.

Everton were deducted a total of eight points last season for breaching league financial rules and Dyche has had to contend with strict spending restrictions since taking over in January 2023.

Everton are the only Premier League team with positive net spend starting in the 2021-22 season, while at the other end of the scale, Sunday’s opponents Chelsea have the biggest negative net spend.

Dyche told a pre-match press conference: “The Profit and Sustainability Rule (PSR) is not a matter of money or lack of money, it is a matter of rules.

“They know there is only so much that can be done immediately. There is an ongoing challenge to correct the problem for the wider future. January will be dominated by PSRs from past years.”
