Dele Alli ‘to turn a new page’ after leaving Everton

Dele Alli says “now is the right time for me to turn over a new leaf” after severing ties with Everton.

The former England midfielder has been a free agent since his contract at Goodison Park expired in June, but he continues to train with the club.

The 28-year-old spent six weeks in rehab last year dealing with childhood trauma, Watched Como’s 2-0 home win over Roma in Serie A on Sunday.

He added: “Before anything happens, it’s important for me to express my gratitude to all the fans, staff and players at Everton Football Club for the support they have given me.”

After leaving Tottenham Hotspur to join Everton in January 2022, Dele made just one start in the Premier League and made 12 substitute appearances.

His last game was in February 2023, when he was loaned to Turkish side Besiktas.

Dele added: “Trying to put the final pieces together to get back into match fitness has been an extremely difficult journey and I would like to express my gratitude to the Everton staff for their hard work during this process.”

“Unfortunately, things didn’t work out the way we all had hoped and I think now is the perfect time for me to turn over a new leaf. I wish everyone at this amazing club the best of luck.”

Dele joined Everton on the same day they appointed Frank Lampard as head coach. Lampard was replaced by Sean Dyche in January 2023.

Dyche said on Friday: “The main point we’ve agreed on as a group is to get him back to a good place and I think he’s there.

“He’s had so much injury misfortune and you can’t imagine the challenges he’s faced. We wish him the best and that’s all we can do.

“For me, it’s just a relief to work with him. It’s a new challenge, but of course we wish him the best.”
