Zac Ward: Ireland Sevens star signs three-year deal with Ulster
Zac Ward has signed a three-year contract with UIster, keeping the winger at the club until 2028.
The 26-year-old joined the Ulster squad on trial after impressing for Ireland’s rugby sevens team at the Paris Olympics in the summer.
Ward’s father Andy won the European Cup with UIster in 1999 and Defeat to Bordeaux in Champions League last week.
“After the Summer Olympics in Paris and some amazing experiences with the Ireland Sevens program, I was ready for a change,” Ward said. Retained starting position United Rugby Championship match against Munster on Friday.
“As a kid I always dreamed of playing for my hometown as I grew up watching my dad wear an Ulster jersey.
“I’ve also become friends with some of the players who are already here and others have really welcomed me into the squad.
“With the help of the coaches, players and staff here I want to move on and hopefully make a lot of great memories with Ulster.”
Ulster general manager Bryn Cunningham said: “We feel Zach can be a great addition to the senior squad and we have been impressed with the way he has integrated into the squad.
“Watching him in sevens, we felt he showed a lot of transferable skills in fifteens, with his dribbling advantage, pace, aerial skills and try-scoring ability all at sevens. Strong attributes in the backcourt.
“It’s also a great example of someone who didn’t come through the traditional route to the senior men’s team, so credit goes to Zach and the journey he’s been on.”
