Paul Pogba’s brother sentenced to three years in extortion case
The brother of former Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has been sentenced to three years in prison, suspended for two years, for attempting to blackmail French footballers.
Matthias Pogba was also fined €20,000 (£16,500) and will avoid jail and serve a year wearing an electronic bracelet.
On Thursday, five other men were found guilty of extortion and other crimes and sentenced in a Paris court to prison terms of four to eight years.
Paul Pogba, 31, said he was “duped” by childhood friends who held him at gunpoint and demanded €13m (£10.8m) in 2022. He said he paid them €100,000 (£82,600).
Mathias Pogba’s lawyer Mbeko Tabla told RMC Sports the sentence was “extremely harsh” and said “I think we will appeal”.
The other five defendants were sentenced to the following sentences: Roushdane K eight years, Boubacar C four years, suspended twice, Adama C five years, Mamadou M five years, suspended 12 months, Machikour K four years, three People suspended.
Last year, Paul Pogba told Al Jazeera that he Considered quitting football due to blackmail attempt.
“When you have money, you have to be careful,” he said. “Money changes people. It can tear families apart. It can start wars.”
