West Indies name Daren Sammy as head coach across all formats

West Indies have appointed T20 World Cup-winning captain Daren Sammy as head coach across all formats.

Sammy, who led the Windies to T20 World Cup titles in 2012 and 2016, has been in charge of the white-ball team since May 2023.

He will also take over testing duties from April 2025, succeeding Andre Coley.

Under Sammy’s leadership, West Indies moved up from ninth to fifth place in the T20 rankings with 20 wins from 35 matches, including home series against England, India and South Africa.

The one-day international side also won four of the seven bilateral series under the leadership of the 40-year-old former Windies all-rounder.

Cricket West Indies president Dr Kishore Shallow said: “Darren Sammy has shown outstanding leadership qualities during his tenure with the white-ball team.”

“His vision, dedication and ability to inspire players make him the ideal candidate to lead across all formats. This appointment marks a bold step forward as we strive to take West Indies cricket to new heights And an exciting step.”

Sammy’s first Test series will be against Australia in June.

Kohli, who guided West Indies to a famous victory over Australia in Brisbane, will continue the two-Test tour of Pakistan in January.

The Jamaican will be hoping to improve on a record of two wins, two draws and seven losses since taking over in May 2023 before making way for Sammy.
