UN Pushes for New Solutions to Revive Libya’s Stalled Elections
The United Nations is convening a new meeting of Libyan experts to revive the country’s postponed national elections, originally scheduled for December 2021. Stephanie Koury, acting head of the United Nations Mission in Libya (UNSMI), said experts would focus on resolving contentious electoral law issues and creating a clear governance framework to guide the process. The U.N.-backed political process has stalled since the election was stalled amid disputes over the main candidate’s qualifications. Libya is ruled by two rival governments, one in the east and the other in the west. A successful election would unify the country under a single government, military and cohesive state institutions, resolving the political deadlock that has plagued the country for more than a decade.
