RFU pay: Bill Sweeney & Tom Ilube could face vote of no confidence, with motion calling for their dismissal gathering support

Rugby league bosses Bill Sweeney and Tom Irubu could face a shock vote of no confidence early next year, with a motion to sack them backed by grassroots clubs.

If the motion reaches the threshold of 100 signatures from clubs across England, an extraordinary general meeting will have to be convened within 45 days, a timetable that will decide the futures of Sweeney and Ilube at the end of February.

A two-thirds majority was then needed to oust Ilube, forcing RFU directors to remove Sweeney after an outcry over his pay package.

Sweeney’s basic salary until June 2024 will be £742,000, up from £430,000 when he was first appointed in 2019.

However, his salary was supplemented by a £358,000 bonus as part of a scheme signed by Ilube to recognize senior leaders’ salary sacrifices during the coronavirus pandemic and linked to various parts of the organization’s performance.
