Fury vs Usyk 2: John Fury will not be in Tyson Fury’s corner, suggests coach SugarHill Steward
Tyson Fury’s manager Sugar Hill Stewart says John Fury will not side with his son in his rematch with Alexander Usyk in Riyadh on Saturday.
Fury, 36, is aiming to exact revenge on WBO, WBA (Super) and IBF heavyweight world champion Usyk, whom he narrowly defeated. They met for the first time on points last May.
John sat in the corner during that game, along with coaches Stuart and Andy Lee and the editor.
During Wednesday’s open practice, Stewart seemed to confirm that John would not be returning to cornerback.
“It’s just myself (will be in the corner), Andy Lee and the editor,” Stewart said. “That’s pretty much it.”
Despite calls for Fury to make changes, the comments will surprise many.
During Fury’s first fight against Usyk, the chaotic nature of his corner was criticized and he was given instructions simultaneously by his father John and two coaches.
Fury, who suffered his first professional defeat in 36 fights against Usyk, has said this week that he’s not sure his father will be on his side.
“I don’t know,” Tyson said when asked about his father’s involvement. “I’m not involved in any of this.”
Fury’s assistant manager Lee also said he didn’t know whether John would be involved, while promoter Frank Warren told BBC Sport earlier this month He expects Fury Sr. to be in trouble again.
Although Usyk became the first undisputed heavyweight champion in nearly 30 years six months ago, the Ukrainian relinquished the IBF title in the rematch.
