Keely Hodgkinson wins BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2024

Olympic 800m gold medalist Keely Hodgkinson has been named BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2024.

The 22-year-old ended his wait for a global title by winning the title at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

She made her debut at the Tokyo Olympics three years ago and finished second, having previously won back-to-back world championship silver medals.

Hodgkinson also defended her European 800m title in Rome and improved the British record to 1 minute 54.61 seconds at the London Diamond League, becoming the sixth fastest woman in history.

“I was a bit shocked,” Hodgkinson told BBC One.

“I’m even more excited for my coach because I wouldn’t be here without his guidance.

“This year has been incredible, I achieved everything I set out to do on the outdoor track. I hope you enjoyed watching Paris.”

Darts player Luke Littler is second and England cricketer Joe Root is third.

Sarah Storey, Alex Yee and Jude Bellingham were also shortlisted by an expert panel for the award, with the winner voted on by the public Decide.

Hodgkinson is the fourth consecutive woman to win the award.

Leigh athletes coaches Trevor Painter and Jenny Meadows won Coach of the Year Award earlier in the evening.
