Former Archbishop of Canterbury Carey quits as priest

Former Archbishop of Canterbury George Carey has resigned as a priest following a BBC investigation into the Church of England’s handling of sexual abuse cases.

Lord Carey resigned after the BBC contacted him accusing him of allowing a priest banned over sexual abuse allegations to return to ministry.

Lord Carey said in his resignation letter that it had been a “privilege to serve”, having been in the profession since 1962.

The 89-year-old was named this month in an investigation into disgraced priest David Tudor, who was banned by the church from being alone with children and paid compensation to victims of sexual abuse.

In his resignation letter, sent on December 4, Lord Carey wrote: “I wish to relinquish my principal license.

“I am now ninety years old and have been actively involved in ministry since being ordained a deacon in 1962 and a priest in 1963.

“I have been privileged to serve in the dioceses of London, Southwell, Durham, Bristol, Bath and Wells, Canterbury and Oxford.

“I thank God for his enduring faithfulness, but I want to acknowledge the extraordinary contribution of Erin, whose faithfulness and support have been outstanding.”
