Man arrested over death of two-year-old in Birmingham crash

A man has been arrested after a two-year-old boy died in a crash involving a stolen Porsche in the West Midlands.

West Midlands Police said the 30-year-old man was detained on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Four adults were injured in the crash, which happened on Dartmouth Road in Smethwick on Saturday night.

The suspect was taken into custody after officers received new information about the collision, police said.

The boy and the adult were traveling in a Toyota Auris when it collided with a gray Porsche Cayenne just before 23:00 GMT.

Detectives said the Porsche was stolen in early December and the driver fled the scene.

Police said a 29-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man remained in hospital with serious injuries following the incident.

The road was closed in both directions to allow specialist reconstruction crews to inspect the site, but has now reopened.

Police believe the stolen car was driven from a roundabout in Kenrick Way, which residents say is a gathering place for street racers.

Sarah Coombes, the Labor MP for West Bromwich, said: “Residents are living hell every Friday and Saturday night fearing these cars will turn up.” Raise the matter in Parliament.

“We have a lot of crashes on this stretch of road and we need to do something about it,” she told BBC radio WM.

She said the “absolutely tragic” death of a young child highlighted “a terrible ongoing problem”.

Russell George, who has been campaigning for safer roads for more than a decade, said he knows something bad is happening when he sees roads blocked.

He said having tighter restrictions on roads was half the battle as it was important to enforce them.
