African Energy Chamber (AEC) (https://EnergyChamber.org/) – as the voice of the African energy community – wholeheartedly supports the extension of Haitham Al Ghais’ term as OPEC Secretary-General for a further three years, effective from August 1, 2025. Secretary-General Al Ghais’ tenure was confirmed at the recently concluded 189th OPEC Conference, affirming his significant contribution to the organization and the global energy sector.

As Secretary-General, Arghese played an important role in steering OPEC through a challenging energy landscape, characterized by market volatility and changing global demand. His leadership has not only strengthened OPEC’s role in global energy governance, but also fostered greater cooperation among member countries and promoted the stability and sustainability of oil markets. Under his guidance, OPEC has launched initiatives aimed at addressing short-term energy security concerns and long-term sustainability goals, making his continued leadership critical to the organization’s future.

The Chamber recognized Secretary General Gass for his key role in advocating for dialogue and cooperation among energy-producing countries, which is critical to ensuring stability and advancing energy security. His efforts to engage with non-OPEC producers and the broader energy community reflect his commitment to a collaborative approach to managing the world’s energy needs. His re-election as Secretary-General marks continuity of leadership during a critical period of transformation in the global energy landscape.

Secretary-General Arghais has also played an important role in strengthening OPEC’s relationship with African energy producers, underscoring the organization’s commitment to supporting the continent’s energy aspirations. OPEC is committed to promoting strategic partnerships and dialogue with African countries, including promoting investment in the upstream oil and gas industry, supporting energy diversification, and addressing Africa’s energy security challenges. OPEC’s role in Africa is crucial, and its members – including Nigeria, Algeria, Libya, Gabon, the Republic of Congo and Equatorial Guinea – are major contributors to global oil supplies.

“Haytham Al-Ghaith’s renewal as OPEC Secretary-General is a testament to his exceptional leadership and the important role he plays in shaping global energy policy. His vision is consistent with the AEC’s mission to achieve sustainable development through sustainable oil and gas development promotes strategic cooperation and enhances energy security,” said AEC Executive Chairman NJ Ayuk. “We look forward to continuing to work with OPEC under his leadership as we strive to achieve an energy future that benefits all countries, especially those in Africa.”

The African Economic Community’s endorsement reflects its strong support for OPEC’s continued leadership in the energy sector and its efforts to balance energy security with climate goals. Through collaborative leadership and forward thinking, the Chamber remains committed to nurturing the partnerships that shape the future of the energy industry, ensuring that Africa’s energy resources are developed in a way that benefits African people and contributes to global energy sustainability.
