World Aquatics Swimming Championships: Abbie Wood wins bronze with British record
Abbie Wood set a British record by winning bronze on the opening night of the World Aquatics Championships in Budapest.
The 25-year-old won her first short course world medal in the women’s 200m individual medley with a time of 2 minutes 2.75 seconds.
Kate Douglas of the United States won the gold medal in a world record time of 2:01.63, with teammate Alex Walsh finishing second in 2:02.65.
Wood entered the race with a personal best of 2:04.77 and fastest time of 2:05.16, but the American pair prevailed despite leading at the halfway mark.
“To be able to get a two-second best at this stage of my career, I’m quite shocked to be honest with myself,” said the European short course champion.
“Breaking the world record with Kate obviously pushed me forward, but it feels really good to be back competing at a world-class level.”
The competition runs until Sunday, December 15th.
