Trump Administration Poised to Advance Somaliland’s Bid for Recognition
Somaliland’s desire for international recognition may finally be gaining momentum as Donald Trump prepares to return to the White House. Support for the country has grown among Republican policymakers, think tanks and potential African advisers. Coupled with the expectation that the Trump administration will prioritize strategic interests in the Horn of Africa region, this indicates that the country will receive U.S. recognition. Such recognition would advance U.S. interests in the region. In addition to strengthening U.S. intelligence operations near restive areas such as Yemen, the move would also counter China’s influence given its military base in Djibouti. Democratic progress in Somaliland, including the holding of peaceful elections in November, has further improved the situation in the country. However, the move could further destabilize the region by heightening tensions with Somalia and drawing criticism from the African Union. Ethiopia, which already cooperates with Somaliland, may benefit from this recognition. However, analysts warn that the United States will approach any partnership in a transactional manner.
