South Africa vs England: Tammy Beaumont and Amy Jones guide tourists to ODI series win
England beat South Africa by six wickets in a rain-affected match in Potchefstroom to win the one-day international series 2-1.
England had set a target of 152 in 23 overs but slipped to 25-3 following another brilliant new-ball spell from Proteas all-rounder Marizanne Kapp.
But a superb non-stop fielding of 90 for the fifth wicket by Tammy Beaumont and Amy Jones revived the momentum of the chase, guiding England to their target in four overs Target.
Beaumont smashed 65 off 46 balls, while Jones smashed 49 off 36 balls.
England were initially settled for 234 for 50 overs by the hosts before a lengthy delay due to rain and lightning, and the quick comeback seemed to surprise them when play resumed.
Opener Maia Bouchier missed a pull in Kapp’s first round, resulting in a four-shot loss and Nat Sciver-Brunt promoted to third, but was caught after just two pitches.
Heather Knight was bowled by a beauty in the fifth innings to put England in trouble and they were left with 22 when Danni Wyatt-Hodge The record was 68-4, with South Africa in the lead.
But the home side could not capitalize on this as their bowlers, apart from Kapp, were wayward, leaving Beaumont and Jones to score freely under little pressure.
England had earlier restricted the hosts to 233-8 in their 50 overs, with skipper Laura Wolvaardt top of the table with a flowing 61 off 68 balls.
But the rest of the batsmen made the mistake of wasting their starts, with the first seven players scoring in double figures without batting.
Knight rotated their bowlers expertly in a tight contest and they coped brilliantly in the first over with Kate Cross leaving the field with a back injury and unable to return, forcing Alice Capsey to bowl her Distributed the ball and ended up with 2-59.
England’s tour ends with a one-off Test match, which starts in Bloemfontein at 08:00 GMT on Sunday.
