Scottie Scheffler matches Tiger Woods record with third straight PGA Tour player of the year award

Scottie Scheffler tied Tiger Woods as the only second man to win the PGA Tour Player of the Year award in three consecutive seasons.

The American’s world number one won his third Jack Nicklaus Award with 91% of the vote.

Scheffler won seven championships throughout the season, including Second Masters Championship April in Augusta National Park.

While Rory McIlroy has won the award three times, Scheffler and Woods are the only two players to win it three times in a row.

“I think we always want to compare someone to Tiger Woods,” Scheffler, 28, said after winning the award.

“I saw it a lot growing up, but there was really only one tiger — that’s it.”

Scheffler is the first player since Woods in 2007 to win seven titles in a single season.

The 48-year-old Woods has won this award 11 times in his career, including five consecutive awards from 1999 to 2003 and three consecutive awards from 2005-07.

While the Masters victory was the highlight, Scheffler said he saved his best golf performance for winning gold at the Paris Olympics.

“I would say the nine holes that stand out to me the most are probably the back nine at the Olympics,” the Texan said.

“The way Teddy (caddie Teddy Scott) and I finished that match was pretty cool.”
