Diego Gomez: Brighton agree to sign Inter Miami’s Paraguay midfielder in January
Brighton have agreed to sign Paraguay international Diego Gomez from Major League Soccer club Inter Miami.
The 21-year-old midfielder will join the Premier League club when the transfer window opens on January 1, 2025.
Gomez began his career at Paraguayan club Libertad before joining Lionel Messi’s hometown club Inter Miami in July 2023.
“We look forward to working with Diego soon,” Brighton head coach Fabian Huerzeller said. “He has already impressed at club and international level.
“Like all young players who come to us from abroad, he will need some time to adapt to the Premier League, but I feel he can make a big contribution and I look forward to working with him.”
Brighton said that Gomez has agreed to join, but the specific terms have not been disclosed.
Gomez made his debut for Libertadores in the Copa Libertadores in May 2022, scoring 6 goals in 52 games before eventually moving to Miami and scoring in his MLS debut.
In his first season, he scored once in five games, but this year he became a regular, scoring six goals in 28 games to help Miami reach the MLS play-offs. .
The 6-foot midfielder represented Paraguay at the Olympics last summer and has made 12 appearances for the senior team.
Brighton technical director David Weir added: “He is a dynamic midfielder who can contribute goals and assists and we believe his fitness will be important as he adapts to the challenges of the Premier League.”
“He has recently finished playing in MLS so we are confident he will be ready to compete for a spot in the team when he joins us next month.”
