Michael Antonio: West Ham players show support with special shirts
“He’s not just a teammate, he’s been a friend for many years and a father to beautiful kids. I just want to say thank you to everyone for their support. As a captain, I see all the messages and support that come in on the microphone.
“It’s one of those things in life that’s bigger than football. The bottom line is that Mike is safe, in good health and he’s here to tell the story. He’s a warrior and a fighter and throughout his career, He’s always been like that, and so have I been. “I know he’s going to be stronger for it. “
Manager Julen Lopetegui added: “Fortunately, judging from the photos of the car, he is a miracle. These are more important things, a person, a father, a brother.”
“We are happy because he overcame yesterday’s surgery.”
Antonio was also given a minute’s ovation in the ninth minute at the London Stadium after the game against Wolves started.
The Hammers said special ‘Antonio 9’ shirts, field tops and player match-worn jerseys will be signed and auctioned, with proceeds donated to the National Health Service and the Air Ambulance.
The club added in a statement that it “would like to once again sincerely thank the paramedics, emergency services, air ambulance crews and the NHS for the incredible support they provided to Mikael following the incident”.
