European Cross Country Championships: Jakob Ingebrigtsen wins third title

Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen triumphed at the European Cross Country Championships in Turkey, claiming his third senior men’s title in four years.

The 24-year-old Olympic 5000m champion opted not to compete in the event last year but regained the crown with a superb performance at Dokumar Park in Antalya.

He led the field in the final lap with a time of 22 minutes and 16 seconds, eight seconds ahead of Italy’s Yemaneberhan Crippa in second place, with Spain’s Thierry Ndikumwenayo third.

Rory Leonard became the first Briton to cross the finish line in ninth place, helping him claim bronze in the men’s team standings.

Kate Axford finished 10th to help Team GB take silver in the women’s senior race, with Italy’s Nadia Battocletti claiming the title, The British team won a bronze medal in the inaugural mixed relay event.

Will Barnicat defends his title in the men’s under-23 category ahead of Nicholas Griggs of Northern Irelandteammate David Stone was third.

Britain’s Phoebe Anderson won the women’s U23 championship, Innes Fitzgerald and Jess Bailey won the gold and silver medals respectively in the women’s U20 group, and George George Couttie finished second in the men’s U20 competition.
