GB cyclist Katy Marchant crashes into London velodrome crowd

A Track Champions League race at London’s Lee Valley Bike Park was called off after British Olympic champion Katie Marchant and another rider crashed through the barriers and into the crowd.

Marchant and German rider Alessa-Catriona Propster left the track at high speed with their bikes, colliding with spectators.

British Cycling said two riders and four supporters were treated by event medical staff and Marchant was taken to hospital.

British Cycling added in a statement: “WBD Sports, British Cycling, Lee Valley VeloPark and the International Cycling Union have unanimously decided to suspend all further racing that evening and wish the rider and all riders a speedy recovery. Spectators were affected.

“We are working closely with all parties to review this incident before taking appropriate action.”

At the same venue at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, a high-speed collision between several riders resulted in England’s Matt Walls’ bike being ejected from the guardrail into the crowd.
