Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Deploys 120 Observers for the Presidential and Parliamentary Elections in Ghana
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has dispatched 120 observers from the Economic Community of West African States Electoral Observation Mission (ECOWAS-EOM) to Ghana’s presidential and parliamentary elections. Observers were deployed in Accra today (5 December 2024) ahead of the December 7 general elections.
As part of the electoral assistance provided by ECOWAS to member states, the Chairman of the ECOWAS Commission, His Excellency Dr. Omar Aliu Toure, approved the deployment of twenty (21) Long-term Observers (LTO) and one hundred and twenty (120) short-term observer. Term Election Observers (STOs) were dispatched to Ghana’s 16 regions and 216 districts to support and monitor the entire electoral process.
Observers include members of the ECOWAS Parliament, members of the Community Court of Justice, representatives of member states’ ministries of foreign affairs, representatives of the ECOWAS Permanent Representatives Committee (PRC) in Abuja, the ECOWAS Electoral Commission Network (ECONEC) and representatives from ECOWAS election experts. area.
ECOWAS Resident Representative in Ghana, His Excellency Ambassador Mohammed Lawan Ghana, while welcoming the observers, stressed that ECOWAS is fully committed to supporting democratic processes in member states through electoral assistance.
He added that “the peaceful conduct and credible results of this election are key to strengthening the credibility of Ghana’s democracy and will further underline ECOWAS’ commitment to democracy in the region”.

In his welcome address, the Head of the ECOWAS Ghana Presidential and Parliamentary Election Observation Mission, His Excellency Mohammed Namadi Sambo, former Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, thanked the observers for their willingness to serve the community.
“This is a noble call by any standards because it contributes to stability, peace and progress in our region. As you know, elections are a major trigger of violent conflicts in the region and across Africa. Vice President Sambo stressed to observers that they must succeed in their mandate to ensure that elections are transparent, free, fair, credible, peaceful and inclusive and maintain ECOWAS standards.
ECOWAS supports Ghana’s democratic process and is committed to accompanying the government and people through the elections.
