Abu Dhabi Grand Prix: Lando Norris on pole with Lewis Hamilton 18th
Lando Norris takes pole position ahead of team-mate Oscar Piastri at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, with McLaren in perfect position to win the team’s title for the first time since 1998 champion.
At the end of a gripping and chaotic qualifying session in the final race of the season, Norris was 0.209 seconds ahead of Piastri.
Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz finished third, 21 points behind McLaren heading into Sunday’s race.
His team-mate Charles Leclerc will start from the back and qualify 13th after he was disqualified for exceeding track limits in the second qualifying session and received a penalty from the back 10 Starting penalty.
Lewis Hamilton finished 18th in his final race for Mercedes when his car hit Kevin Magnussen’s Haas as he tried to pass on the decisive lap of the first session. A bollard that moved Hamilton’s car out of the way while driving, resulting in his car being destroyed.
“You can’t make it up,” said Hamilton, who will start 16th after penalties for Leclerc and Williams’ Alex Albon. “That’s it.”
