World Superbikes: Jonathan Rea considered ‘walking away’ after ‘dark’ year
The 37-year-old said there were a number of factors that contributed to his disappointing year.
“As a team, we’ve taken a lot of different directions in terms of development. And, at times this season, I felt like the team and the bike weren’t getting the best out of me,” he said.
“I know when we find out my potential is higher, that’s why I keep fighting. What’s been frustrating to me this year is that I didn’t reach my full potential.”
He also explained that two serious accidents at Phillip Island early last season “had a huge impact on him physically and mentally” as he embarked on his new adventure.
“I lost a lot of confidence and it took time to rebuild it, but there were some magical moments where I managed to get pole position, fight for the podium, get on the podium and overall I was at the end of the race. The speed is very competitive as is most people’s,” he said.
“Overall it was definitely below par for me and not where I expected it to be.
“My expectations were much higher after the Yamaha performance last year, but we didn’t seem to get off the ground right away. Even in the tough moments, I came out with a positive attitude.”
The County Antrim rider is aiming to turn his fortunes around in the 2025 season, which kicks off with the traditional season opener at Phillip Island on February 22-23.
“We need to make some adjustments this offseason and change our mentality heading into 2025. It’s really important to set goals to motivate us as a team to go out and work hard,” he explained.
“I am 100% sure that next year will be a step forward from this year. We are brewing a lot of new things and the last test with my team in Jerez was positive.
“I’m a lot faster than I was on the race weekend and have a good feel for the bike. Being able to ride 100% in every corner is the goal and gives me the confidence to be able to push. ”
