Storm Darragh: UK to be battered by rain, winds as amber warnings issued

A developing area of ā€‹ā€‹low pressure will start to bring heavy rain and strong winds to western parts of the UK later on Friday.

As the situation develops further into Saturday, this will become Storm Darla, with its center moving across northern England.

The Met Office has issued a yellow severe weather warning for strong winds in Northern Ireland, southwest Scotland and western England and Wales between 03:00 GMT and 21:00 GMT on Saturday.

Wind gusts will be around 70-80 mph (113-129 km/h), especially in coastal areas. Further inland, wind gusts will reach 60-70 mph (96-113 km/h).

These gusts have the potential to damage buildings and bring disruption to travel, particularly ferry services across the Irish Sea.

The Met Office has also issued a higher yellow wind warning across England and Wales, valid from 15:00 GMT on Friday until 06:00 on Sunday, when Daraa moves into the North Sea.

Gusty wind speeds will generally be around 40-50 mph (64-80 km/h) across England and Wales, which may cause some traffic disruption on Saturday.
